Congratulations to our Holy Name Volleyball Teams!!!
The school volleyball teams have started out the year very well. We want to congratulate them on their performance and how hard they are working. Our B team consists of the following members: Kaitlin Lujan, Krystal Jasik, Annali Chavez, Jacklynn Garza, Ashley Rodriguez, Miranda Maldonado, Maegan Hernandez, Briana Olivares, Destiny Copeland.
The B team has been working hard and has a .500 record. They have been playing some schools that are larger than us so they have been doign a really good job. The B team won their first game in the Holy Cross tournament and then lost their second and were eliminated. Once district games start next week, we expect them to challenge for the district championship.
The A team consists of the following players: Kaylin Mills, Gabriella Cancino, Jessica Solano, Angelica Chavez, Emily Lockamy, Taryn Travieso, Kayla DeLeon, Camryn Carreon, and Isabella Sanchez.
The A team has only lost one game so far and they have done an amazing job! They won the Holy Cross tournament a week ago defeating St. James, St. Margaret Mary's, Holy Cross, and St. Mary's Fredricksburg. Two of those teams are schools that are larger than Holy Name and they still brought home the 1st place trophy. They have also beaten Little Flower, St. Pius, St. John Berchmann and a few others. Their current record is around 10-1. It is difficult to keep up with all of the tournament games, etc. They play again this week and then are in the Little Flower tournament next weekend. Good Luck Lady Bobcats!

Meet the Teacher - Thursday, August 11th
We are making a big change to our Meet the Teacher event for the 2011-2012 school year. This change will help our teachers be able to provide a very precise account of what the expectations are for your child. There will be two sessions this year instead of the all day event we have had in previous years. The Pre-K3 through 2nd grade will have their Meet the Teacher event at 11:30 am on August 11th. This event will start in the Activity Center and then move to your child's class. The 3rd through 8th grade students will have their Meet the Teacher event on the same day, August 11th, but at 5 pm in the afternoon. Here is a sample of what the agenda will look like for each session:
Each sessions will follow the following time schedule:
11:30 or 5:00 – Welcome in Activity Center
Mr. Mills introduces staff and shares a few words
11:45 or 5:15 – release to classrooms
11:55 or 5:25 – classroom session starts
12:15 or 5:45 – classroom session ends
Additional 15 minutes to get your child’s things organized in the classroom
12:30 or 6 p.m. – Meet the Teacher Concludes
If you are unable to make the scheduled time for your child, please make an attempt to send someone in your place. If you are unable to make the assigned time, you can bring your child's supplies to the school office that day between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm. At that time, we will have someone open your child's classroom so you can leave their school supplies for the first day of school. Unfortunately you will not be able to meet with the teacher at that time because they will be involved in staff development most of the day, other than the assigned times for Meet the Teacher. We hope that all are able to make the scheduled Meet the Teacher times so that you can receive valuable information to help your child have a very successful year. If you are unable to be here at all, this information will be sent out via e-mail and the classroom. Teachers will usually re-send information covered in this event out the first week of school.
Please let us know if you have any questions!!

Big Academic Changes during Summer, 2011
The summer of 2011 has been and will continue to be very busy at Holy Name Catholic School. Our summer started the week after the students went on vacation with Mr. Mills and the teachers meeting to plan for the 2011-12 school year. The main issue that was addressed was the curriculum that the school currently uses. The problem with the textbooks the students currently use is that they average ten years of age or more. This meeting was planned to address this situation and plan for new and updated curriculum that would be used for the comng school year.
After a day long meeting, some very exciting decisions were made that will dramatically improve your child's curriculum materials in the coming year. The changes are as follows:
1) A new religion curriculum is going to be purchased this summer for all levels Pre-K to 8th. Holy Name Catholic School's primary responsibility is to teach the Catholic Faith. The best way to do that is with the latest religious curriculum materials for your child. Some of our children have had paper religion books that are falling apart for the last couple of years. Our goal is to have new religion materials in their hands this year to improve their religious education. The new materials the teachers will have available ot them will also enhance your child's religious education.
2) Adopt CSCOPE - CSCOPE is the source for an all-in-one approach to a quality curriculum system. CSCOPE is a comprehensive, customizable, user-friendly curriculum management system built on the most current research-based practices in the field. In addition to the curriculum, CSCOPE encompasses resources for the implementation, monitors the curriculum and establishes an accountability process to ensure a quality implementation.
The curriculum component of CSCOPE is based on best practice models from top researchers. Lessons are all aligned with the TEKS/TAKS and each lesson meets the highest standards of rigor and relevance.
This curriculum will be implemented through all K-8 grade levels and subject matter. The textbooks that your child used in the past will now only be used as a reference when doing their schoolwork.
As a Holy Name parent it is crucial that you know what your child will be learning. You can access the parent portal for CSCOPE through this link, http://www.cscope.us/parentportal/ It will help you understand more about how CSCOPE is going to transform your child's education for this year and year's to come at Holy Name.
You can always e-mail Mr. Mills, cmills@holynamesa.org, if you have any additional questions.
3) Purchase a new national curriculum for our preschool students. For those of you that have had a child in our preschool in the last few years, you know our Pre-K teachers do an outstanding job. This decision will now take what they are doing and provide much more resources for them to teach your child. This should be evident in the curriculum materials you see for your 3 and 4 year old during the school year. The teachers will be informing you about this new curriculum as the materials arrive and they receive their training.
4) Finally, our meeting and test scores showed that we needed to implement a more focused phonics program for our younger students. We researched effective phonics programs in the Archdiocese and have found one used at Holy Spirit. The 3K through 2nd grade teachers will be trained in the phonics program suring the summer and start using it with the students this school year.
As you can see, we determnied the top four issues that would stregthen your child's education at Holy Name and what we could do about it. From the above improvements and additions, you can see that your child/children are going to see a stregthening across the board in everything they are taught at our school. We are very excited about these changes and these changes are an investment in your child. We want you to see that your child's religious and academic education at Holy Name is our top priority. That is why it is the main piece of our mission statement. Please be patient with your child's teacher this year as we work hard to implement these changes and feel free to ask to see some of these exciting new curriculum changes coming to your child's classroom.

Please Support New Scrip Program!
Last week we sent home a scrip order form for all families. Scrip is one of the most popular ways that schools fund raise in today's difficult economic environment. Holy Name plans on this being our fundraising method of choice for the future. For this year, we are offering a 50/50 credit towards family's tuition at the end of the year. This is an example of how this would work if you placed the following order:
$400 - HEB - 2%
$400 - Texaco - 1.5%
$100 - Dominos Pizza - 8%
$100 - Home Depot - 6%
$200 - iTunes Gift Cards - 5%
$100 - Macy's - 10%
$200 - Walgreens - 6%
$100 - Office Depot - 4%
$100 - Sally Beauty Supply - 12%
$100 - Payless Shoes - 13%
This is just an example of the Scrip Gift Cards you might purchase over a month or longer period. If you were to buy all of the amounts above, you would spend $1800. With the percentages listed above that the companies give back to schools, Holy Name would get a total of $90. The school would credit your tuition account at the end of the year.
You might say that is only $45 credited to my tuition. It isn't worth it! Well, that might be true if you only order one time, but if you commit to buying Scrip all year long, then you can multiply that $45 times 10 times or more. If you get family to order Scrip, then you can make even more money for your tuition. With the example above multiplied times 10, you would make $450 towards your tuition. The only work to earn that $450 is writing a check to the school and getting back gift cards to use for your gas, groceries, eating out, etc. Not that hard to get $450. For people that reach these levels in the future, our plan is that you would not be required to do any fundraising. Praise be to God for that. No one likes fundraising.
Please check it our and get those orders back by Thursday (12/2) so we can place the orders and get them back right away.
God Bless You and Your Family!
Chad Mills

Online Grade Book E-Mail Sent Out Thursday, Sept. 23rd
Holy Name's new online grade book is now available and e-mails with instructions on how to access it went home on Thursday, Sept. 23rd. If you submitted your e-mail on your registration forms or through SMART then you will be then you should have received this e-mail. For those families that pre-paid your tuition in full, you might want to send your e-mail address to Mr. Mills. While our primary goal with SchoolSpeak is to provide an online grade book, it will also provide daily assignments listed by your child's teacher and more detailed information on what is going on in your child's classroom as well as the school. It will also eventually offer many more options that we will share with you later. With all of the services available in SchoolSpeak, we are slowly training the teachers in each of these areas. When you log-in, please remember that some areas will not be accessible or available because we have to train teachers first, then open the new services to parents.
Preschool parents need to understand that due to how preschool works it is hard to utilize a gradebook that is based on a Kinder through 12th grade program. We are working on a way to give you more real-time updates of your child's progress and will be reporting back to you how this will happen during the school year.
We are very excited about SchoolSpeak and the online grade book. SchoolSpeak is also an online database of all students and their families. When you log-in, you will be able to review all of your personal information. Please update anything that is incorrect and add data that we have not entered.
Our goal is that SchoolSpeak will be Holy Name's information portal to parents for many years to come. It will also allow for all families to register online for next year and we will no longer need to have all of the forms filled out year after year.
